Delegates from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) gathered in Montgomery on April 7 for the Alabama State Council meeting, bringing together union members from across the state to address legislative priorities and advocate for working families.

The meeting focused on defending union rights, opposing corporate influence, protecting retirement security, supporting veterans, and encouraging civic engagement. More than 45 participants attended discussions and presentations centered on these topics. The event also featured elected officials and candidates who pledged support for pro-worker legislation.

“This is about making sure working people have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “We’re fighting back against corporate power and pushing for policies that put workers first because when working families advance, our communities advance.”

IAM Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon said member involvement in politics is crucial. “Being politically engaged isn’t optional – it’s essential,” said Solomon. “The decisions being made at every level of government directly impact our union, our jobs, our rights, and our futures. When IAM members show up, they listen.” Delegates took this message to heart by spending a day at the Alabama State Capitol lobbying lawmakers.

Rickie Langford, IAM Alabama State Council President, highlighted the importance of unity among members: “This meeting shows the power of bringing members together with a shared purpose. When we unite, educate, and take action, we can move the needle for working people across Alabama.” The council also held elections for its Executive Board during this session.

Michelle Hunt of IAM Local 2003 was elected as president—the first woman to hold this position—alongside other officers including Secretary-Treasurer Marc Johnson (Local 2003), Vice Presidents Duane Williams (South; Local 2003), Anthony Holton (South; Local 2003), Rickie Langford (North; Local 44), and James Tate (North; Local 2766). “I’m honored to be elected and to serve alongside such dedicated members,” said Hunt. “I’m committed to continuing the work of pushing forward an agenda that puts working people first and strengthens our union across Alabama.”
