Chatham County voters have approved the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), with 61% voting in favor. The renewed one-cent sales tax is expected to generate about $700 million over six years, funding a range of capital improvements throughout the county. Projects supported by this revenue will include upgrades to roads, drainage systems, parks, public safety facilities, and other infrastructure that serves both residents and visitors.
A notable aspect of the SPLOST renewal is that more than 40% of the revenue will come from visitors to Chatham County. This structure helps keep property taxes lower for local homeowners while still providing necessary funding for community improvements.
The Savannah Area Chamber expressed gratitude to its members and community partners following the vote. “The Savannah Area Chamber extends a heartfelt thank you to our members, partners, and community advocates whose efforts helped make this victory possible. Your commitment and advocacy have ensured that visitors continue to contribute to the funding of these critical community improvements, thereby reducing the burden on local taxpayers and driving progress for everyone who calls Chatham County home,” said representatives from the Chamber.
