The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced more than $320 million in new investments to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) research under the Genesis Mission. The funding, which is supported by President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut and DOE appropriations, aims to advance “AI for science” efforts and build an integrated American Science and Security Platform.

According to DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil, “Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery. By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”

The department outlined four major initiatives:

– The American Science Cloud (AmSC) will serve as a platform infrastructure for hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data across the research community. This resource will help national laboratories, industry, and other partners access DOE’s large collection of AI-ready scientific data.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon) will focus on developing self-improving AI models using DOE’s specialized data, facilities, and expertise. Teams selected for this initiative are expected to provide capabilities useful across various fields in science and engineering.
– Fourteen projects will support robotics, automated laboratories, and autonomous control of experiments as part of efforts to transform laboratory environments through embodied AI systems.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards have been made for projects that curate existing datasets and refine robust, validated AI models for scientific use. These advancements are expected to allow AI systems to analyze massive datasets from experiments or simulations efficiently, leading to new discoveries or improved experimental design.

More information about these projects can be found on the Genesis Mission website.
