Early voting has started in Chatham County for the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The measure is presented as a way to fund important infrastructure projects throughout the county.
Supporters of the SPLOST renewal highlight several reasons for its importance. They note that more than 40% of the revenue generated by SPLOST comes from tourists and non-residents, which means a significant portion of the funding does not come from local taxpayers. Additionally, proponents argue that SPLOST helps reduce reliance on property taxes by spreading financial responsibility beyond homeowners. The program is also said to attract state and federal matching funds, increasing investment in local projects.
Early voting began on October 14 and will continue through Election Day on November 4. Voters can find early voting locations and view sample ballots at VoteYesSPLOST.com.
