Union members from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in Florida recently held a legislative conference in Tallahassee. The five-day event brought together both active members and retirees, who met with state legislators to discuss issues such as labor rights, wage improvements, and the protection of pensions and Social Security.
The union’s leaders and activists stressed their opposition to proposed legislation that they say could weaken collective bargaining rights and undermine the financial security of working people. “Leaders and activists emphasize the importance of opposing anti-union legislation that threatens the collective bargaining power and financial stability of the working class.”
Members from various regions across Florida—including areas like the Kennedy Space Center, South Florida, and the Panhandle—participated in meetings with lawmakers. Their stated goal was to advocate for policies that benefit union workers statewide while also preparing for political engagement ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
By meeting directly with elected officials, IAM representatives aim to ensure that machinists’ concerns are considered in state policy decisions. “By engaging directly with lawmakers, these members aim to serve as a political voice for machinists across the state, from the Kennedy Space Center to South Florida to the Panhandle. The main goal of the gathering is to influence the political landscape to ensure a better quality of life for all union workers and prepare for the 2026 midterms.”
