Dr. Marcus Plescia has been appointed as the new district health director for Fulton County, with his term beginning on November 3, 2025. Dr. Plescia brings more than 20 years of experience in family medicine and public health to the role. He earned his medical degree, Master of Public Health, and Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His training in family medicine took place at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.
Dr. Plescia is board-certified in family medicine and has worked with a range of populations, including homeless, urban-poor, and rural underserved communities. He recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Director of the Office of Science and Medicine at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to that, he was Chief Medical Officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), where he supported state public health leaders and served as their main media spokesperson.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Marcus Plescia as the new district health director for Fulton County,” said Dr. Toomey. “His outstanding track record of managing public health programs at the local, state, and federal levels, along with his medical qualifications, make him the ideal candidate to lead the Fulton County Board of Health.”
Dr. R. Chris Rustin, who has been serving as interim district health director, will assist Dr. Plescia during his transition through December 2025.
