Two faculty members from Georgia Southern University’s College of Arts and Humanities will participate as presenting authors at the 2026 Savannah Book Festival, scheduled for Free Festival Saturday on February 7.
Kendra R. Parker, Ph.D., a member of the Department of English, is set to present her book, “Understanding Octavia E. Butler,” at 11:40 a.m. According to the university, “Parker’s work offers insight into the life and literary legacy of Octavia E. Butler, exploring the cultural and imaginative power of one of science fiction’s most influential voices.”
Later in the day, Bennett Parten, Ph.D., from the Department of History, will present his book titled “Somewhere Toward Freedom: Sherman’s March and the Story of America’s Largest Emancipation” at 2:20 p.m. The university stated that “Parten offers a different perspective of Sherman’s March to the Sea by delving into the often overlooked story of thousands of enslaved people who experienced the march as a journey into freedom.”
Both Parker and Parten are part of a lineup featuring more than 40 nationally recognized authors during Free Festival Saturday. All presentations will be followed by Q&A sessions and book signings. The events take place at venues across historic downtown Savannah and are open to all attendees without charge.
The Savannah Book Festival is regarded as one of the leading literary events in the Southeast and attracts thousands each year.
