Georgia Southern University Investigator Samuel Derr has been named Officer of the Year by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP). Derr, a Marine Corps veteran, joined the university’s police department in 2017 and currently serves as an investigator in the criminal investigation unit.
Derr’s responsibilities include working to ensure the safety of Georgia Southern’s campuses and students. According to Georgia Southern Police Chief Trey Drawdy, “Investigator Derr strives to excel in everything that he undertakes and is the epitome of a humble professional. He truly embraces our motto, which is ‘To Serve, To Protect and to Educate’.”
The GACP considers nominations from over 650 law enforcement agencies annually for this award. Derr was nominated by members of the Georgia Southern community due to his commitment and effectiveness in resolving cases. He is the first officer from Georgia Southern University Police Department to receive this recognition.
Georgia Southern Police Captain Joshua Barker said, “He is incredibly inquisitive, approaching each investigation judgment-free. He cares about the community and the work he does in this field. He brings that same effort when caring for victims as well. He is a tremendous asset to the team.”
Upon receiving the award, Derr acknowledged his colleagues: “It’s an honor to accept this award, but every officer I work with deserves this. I couldn’t do what I do without them.” He added, “I enjoy serving the Georgia Southern community because we have a special mission. It’s to protect our students and our campus. To be able to carry out that mission, that’s what’s important to me.”
