IAM District 6 members increased their support for homeless veterans in Des Moines by making the annual Stand Down event an official part of their District HELPS program in 2025. Locals throughout District 6 contributed funds, which were matched by the district, raising a total of $1,150. This sum, along with donated supplies, supported the Homeless Veterans Stand Down. According to organizers, $750 can provide approximately 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen members from three IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling more than three hours to participate. Their efforts included assisting with registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for hundreds of volunteers at the site. The event served more than 500 people—about half veterans and half civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM members worked alongside other volunteers to help veterans and their families access care, meals, and essential services designed to support them over the coming months. District 6 has encouraged all IAM Districts and Locals to consider supporting Homeless Veterans Stand Down events within their communities and notes that volunteer participation remains vital.
