The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Midwest Territory and District 77 marked the 25th anniversary of their Guide Dogs of America (GDA) Charity Golf Tournament, known as the “John Massetti Memorial,” in Minnesota this past Sunday.
This year’s event brought together fifty-six golfers who helped raise more than $15,000 for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines. The tournament also included over $5,000 in raffle prizes, which were made possible by contributions from supporters and sponsors.
The annual tournament began a quarter-century ago, initiated by John Massetti, a member of Local 1833. At that time, most GDA fundraising events were motorcycle runs. Massetti proposed organizing a golf tournament to unite members for a charitable purpose. Even after his passing two decades ago, IAM District 77 and Local 1833 have continued to organize the event each year.
The funds raised support Guide Dogs of America, which provides guide dogs and service dogs to people who need them.
“I want to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to come out and support Guide Dogs of America,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “It’s because of the dedication and hard work of our members, our retirees, and our volunteers that this event continues to be such a success.”
“This tournament is more than just a day on the golf course,” said IAM District 77 Directing Business Representative Andrew Peltier. “It’s a powerful way to honor John Massetti’s legacy and make a real difference in the lives of those who rely on Guide Dogs of America. The commitment and generosity of everyone involved is truly inspiring.”
Over its 25-year history, the John Massetti Memorial Golf Tournament has become an important tradition for IAM members in Minnesota as they continue efforts to raise funds for service animals that assist individuals with disabilities.
