The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) has issued a statement expressing support for the people of Minnesota amid concerns over government actions that, according to the union, threaten constitutional rights.
In a message addressed to its members, IAM Union leaders highlighted recent events in Minnesota as a challenge to democratic values and civil liberties. The statement emphasized the union’s commitment to standing with communities facing intimidation or suppression by authorities.
“When government authority is used to intimidate communities, suppress dissent, or detain people without due process, the labor movement has a responsibility to speak with clarity and purpose,” said the IAM Union in its communication.
The union affirmed its solidarity with Minnesota residents, including union members and working families who are calling for accountability. “No worker should fear being targeted for speaking out, protesting peacefully, or simply existing in their community,” the statement read.
IAM Union leadership noted that it is joining broader labor efforts to address these issues through visible acts of solidarity while adhering to collective bargaining agreements. The organization stressed that protecting workers’ rights remains central: “Labor is showing up to oppose the unconstitutional detention of innocent Minnesotans and the targeting of people—no matter their immigration status—while ensuring that workers are not placed in further jeopardy.”
Reiterating its longstanding principles, the union stated: “The IAM Union has always believed that dignity on the job and dignity in our communities are inseparable. Working people build this country, sustain its economy, and keep it moving every day. When we stand together with discipline and unity, we can demand justice while safeguarding one another.”
The union also outlined several ways members can demonstrate support. These include sharing statements from allied organizations such as the Minnesota AFL-CIO on social media; participating in solidarity actions like wearing blue on Friday, January 23; posting photos using #MNAFLCIO; placing candles in windows; holding faith vigils; writing letters to Minnesota-based corporations; and contacting Congress to advocate for oversight of federal agencies.
The statement concluded with a call for unity from Brian Bryant, International President of IAM Union.
