IAM union members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico have voted to retain their union representation, rejecting a decertification effort supported by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. The vote marks a significant decision for the aircraft technicians who maintain safety and reliability standards at the facility in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

The workers’ decision comes after years of delays in contract negotiations with management. In May 2022, over 200 mechanics and related employees joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), seeking improved working conditions and fair treatment. However, bargaining has stalled for nearly three years, prompting the IAM to request federal mediation from the National Mediation Board in 2023. Verdi, a German union representing Lufthansa employees across Europe, also called on Lufthansa AG—the parent company—to help resolve the ongoing dispute.

Union leaders described the vote as an affirmation of worker solidarity and urged Lufthansa Technik management to engage in good faith negotiations.

“Lufthansa Technik must now come to the table ready to negotiate a contract that honors these workers’ skills and contributions,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “The workers have spoken loudly and clearly: they want respect, they want stability, and they want a fair contract. The IAM will not rest until they get the contract they deserve.”

“This vote is a powerful testament to what solidarity can achieve,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “Lufthansa Technik workers stood together against outside interference and made it clear that they want a strong union fighting for them at the table. Now it’s time for the company to respect that mandate and bargain in good faith.”

“Our members in Puerto Rico showed tremendous resolve in the face of intimidation and delay tactics,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “They know their worth, and they know that union representation is the path to better wages, safer working conditions, and a more secure future. Their unity is inspiring, and the IAM is with them every step of the way.”

Workers echoed these sentiments on-site.

“We stayed united because we know what we bring to this company,” said Lufthansa Technik Aircraft Mechanic Ilianalyn Delgado. “We keep these aircraft flying safely. We deserve respect, a voice on the job, and a contract that reflects our work. This vote shows we’re not backing down.”

The IAM continues to call on Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico management to end its delaying tactics and return to negotiations prepared to reach an agreement reflecting workers’ contributions.
