Tom O’Heron, a retired director of collective bargaining for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), has died at age 69. O’Heron was known for his long-standing commitment to union work and advocacy on behalf of workers.

O’Heron’s career with IAM began in 1978 when he joined Local 21 after training as a machinist at the Trane Company in Wisconsin. He later served as Directing Business Representative for District 66, where he represented coworkers and built a reputation for thoughtful leadership. His work led him to roles within the IAM International organization, including Collective Bargaining Coordinator and then Director, before retiring in 2016.

During his tenure as director, O’Heron played an important role in negotiating contracts that provided improved wages, benefits, and protections for union members. His efforts are credited with strengthening the IAM over his more than four decades of service.

“Tom O’Heron was a true trade unionist whose work shaped our union and improved the lives of countless working families,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “He will be remembered for his steady leadership at the bargaining table, his lifelong dedication to fairness, and his unwavering commitment to solidarity.”

Outside of work, O’Heron spent time coaching youth sports such as baseball and high school basketball. He also enjoyed golf and supporting family activities. He was active in his community through faith-based organizations like the Knights of Columbus.

The IAM expressed condolences to O’Heron’s family, friends, and others who knew him, noting that his leadership and generosity will be missed.
