Kaiser Permanente has acquired approximately seven acres of land in Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood for $31.5 million, according to an announcement first reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The California-based health care provider described the purchase as a “first step” toward a future project focused on improving access to care but did not provide specific details or a timeline for development.

The site, located at 41 Fulton Street, was previously used as a parking lot for Braves games and Georgia State University football events at Center Parc Stadium. The seller, Animal, is an Atlanta real estate firm that bought 10.3 acres in 2024 and will retain a nearby three-acre parcel fronting Georgia Avenue and Hank Aaron Drive for its own future development.

This acquisition comes amid ongoing concerns about health care capacity in Atlanta, particularly on the Southside and Westside. Since Wellstar closed Atlanta Medical Center in 2022, Grady Memorial Hospital has faced increased demand for trauma services, putting additional strain on local health systems. The former AMC campus at 340 Boulevard North East has been demolished and may be redeveloped into a mixed-use project.

Political leaders have also highlighted the need for expanded medical facilities in the area. In the past year, Mayor Andre Dickens proposed using $115 million from the Beltline’s tax allocation district to support an unspecified health care initiative and called on Fulton County and state officials to address gaps in medical access. Separately, Atrium Health purchased a 40-acre site near the West End MARTA station for nearly $70 million in 2024; this property is widely rumored to be intended for hospital use.

Kaiser’s newly acquired lots are situated across from Georgia State University’s under-construction baseball stadium within Summerhill—a neighborhood that has seen significant redevelopment since the Braves relocated to Cobb County in 2017. Recent years have brought thousands of new apartments and retail options such as Publix, transforming Summerhill into one of Atlanta’s most active mixed-use districts.

Kaiser stated it will engage with community members through a “deliberate planning process” before finalizing plans for the site. The organization currently serves about 426,000 members across metro Atlanta and Athens.

“first step” toward a future project aimed at improving access to care,” Kaiser Permanente said in its announcement.
