IAM Union members from across Nebraska recently convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council. The council serves as the political arm of the IAM Union, focusing on advocacy, member engagement, and preparation for the upcoming midterm elections.

Delegates representing Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 attended the meeting to discuss legislative priorities and share updates from their respective locals. The main agenda item was the significance of the upcoming midterm elections and supporting candidates who back collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.

Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the session with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink highlighted the importance of active participation among union members. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”

The gathering also included remarks from IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson. He offered a national perspective on the midterm elections and stressed the importance of coordinated grassroots mobilization. IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker expressed ongoing support for Nebraska’s political activities.

The event reinforced that continued political engagement is vital for advancing and protecting the interests of IAM Union members and working families in Nebraska.
