Tameka Hutchinson has been appointed as the Division Director of the newly renamed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center in Savannah. Hutchinson brings 18 years of experience at the Civic Center, where she most recently served as Acting Division Director and previously worked as Food and Beverage Manager since 2007. Her responsibilities have included event coordination, client relations, vendor management, and staff supervision.

“Tameka’s deep institutional knowledge, steady leadership, and long-standing commitment to excellence make her the right choice to lead the Civic Center,” said Jay Melder, Savannah’s City Manager. “She understands this facility inside and out, and her experience ensures continuity as we continue to elevate the Civic Center’s role in our community.”

Hutchinson also worked in the City’s Real Estate Department, managing contracts and right-of-way access petitions. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.

In her new role, Hutchinson will oversee operations at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center to maintain its status as a multi-purpose venue for entertainment and cultural events. The center is an important part of Savannah’s efforts to improve operational efficiency and manage city assets for community benefit.

The City of Savannah is organizing a free community celebration and official renaming ceremony on Saturday, January 17 at the Civic Center located at 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave., in partnership with the Savannah Martin Luther King Day Observance Day Committee and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. During this event, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the City of Savannah Municipal Archives will host a memory-collection session in the lobby where residents can share memories related to the former Martin Luther King, Jr. Arena, reflect on Dr. King’s legacy in Savannah, and suggest ideas for future uses of the Civic Center.
