Visit Savannah President and CEO Joseph Marinelli, along with other tourism leaders from the Coastal Empire, recently addressed a Georgia House Study Committee to request greater state investment in tourism marketing through Explore Georgia. The group emphasized that Georgia is currently ranked last among 12 Southeastern states in terms of spending on tourism promotion. This is despite tourism being an important contributor to employment, economic impact, and the growth of small businesses throughout the state.

The initiative aims to position Georgia as the “#1 State to Visit” by increasing efforts to promote the state more effectively. This presentation was similar to one previously delivered before a Georgia Senate Study Committee and is part of a wider strategy intended to gain support from lawmakers ahead of the 2026 Legislative Session. Supporters argue that more funding for Explore Georgia will help keep the state competitive in attracting tourists, conventions, and large-scale events.

The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce has made increased funding for state tourism one of its main legislative goals and plans to continue its advocacy as part of its agenda for 2026.
