More than 20 members of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce participated in a volunteer event in November, supporting the construction of a new home with Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity. The initiative took place in the Summerside neighborhood and was part of the Chamber’s ongoing community engagement efforts.
Volunteers worked alongside Zerik Samples, CEO of Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity and member of the Chamber Board, as well as staff from both organizations. Their tasks included weatherproofing the home’s exterior and building a frame for a backyard shed.
The project is designed to provide stable housing for a local low-income family. Under Habitat for Humanity’s program, future homeowners are required to contribute between 300 and 350 hours of “sweat equity.” This includes working on their own homes, assisting with other projects, attending educational classes, and volunteering at Habitat ReStores. This approach allows families to access affordable mortgages through donated materials and volunteer labor.
“Thanks to this partnership approach, along with donated materials and volunteer labor, Habitat can offer families homes with affordable mortgages, creating opportunity and empowerment,” said representatives from the Savannah Area Chamber.
The Chamber has announced plans to continue its Volunteer Days in 2026.
