The Savannah City Council has approved the city’s 2026 budget, a decision that city officials say advances the goals set out in Savannah’s strategic plan known as GPS. The finalized budget, which is now accessible to the public on the City’s website at SavannahGA.gov/Budget, is the result of several months of public input and internal review.

The new budget includes funding for areas such as public safety, housing, infrastructure, drainage and stormwater improvements, youth and family services, economic mobility, employee retention, and other essential city services. City leaders stated that these investments are aimed at maintaining fiscal responsibility while supporting neighborhoods throughout Savannah.

Mayor Van R. Johnson II emphasized the significance of the spending plan: “A budget is more than numbers, it’s a statement of who we are and what we believe Savannah deserves,” said Mayor Johnson. “This budget invests in safer streets, stronger neighborhoods, and opportunities for every family. With this plan, we’re continuing the work of building a Savannah that thrives, not just for today, but for generations to come.”

City Manager Jay Melder highlighted how the budget supports citywide priorities: “The 2026 Budget aligns every investment with our GPS strategic priorities,” Melder said. “This plan strengthens our core services, expands our capacity to meet the needs of a growing city, and ensures we are accountable for measurable results. I’m grateful to our residents, the City Council, and our employees for helping shape a budget that keeps Savannah moving forward.”

According to city officials, this year’s budget maintains a balanced approach while providing funds for modernization efforts and key infrastructure upgrades. It also prioritizes public safety initiatives, mobility improvements, expanded youth programs, and neighborhood revitalization.

Residents played an active role in shaping the final version of the 2026 Budget by participating in public meetings and workshops during the fall.
