City of Savannah administrative offices and facilities will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Emergency services will continue to operate as usual.
The annual Veterans Day Parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Streets along the parade route and surrounding areas will be cleared starting as early as 6 a.m., which will affect downtown traffic and parking for both residents and visitors. No parking zones will be marked before the event, and vehicles left in these zones will be towed at the owner’s expense. Additional information about the parade and its route can be found at savannahpd.org/veteransdayparade.
Starting Monday night, City Hall will display red, white, and blue lighting to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Residents and visitors are invited to take photos and share them on social media using #VeteransDay while tagging the city’s official channels.
Sanitation services will also be affected by the holiday closure. There will be no residential garbage collection, yard waste collection, or curbside recycling on Tuesday, November 11. These services will resume on Wednesday with a one-day delay for all routes; Wednesday’s recycling routes move to Thursday, and Thursday’s move to Friday. Street sweeping operations are suspended for Tuesday but resume Wednesday.
Dean Forest Road Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will both close on Tuesday for the holiday, reopening Wednesday at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively.
Residents are encouraged to review their annual sanitation schedule packets or visit savannahga.gov/sanitation for updated collection dates.
Veterans Day was first established as Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 to mark the end of World War I. In 1938, Congress made November 11 a legal holiday. The name was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 after President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation expanding its purpose to honor all veterans of all wars.
