More than 225 federal employees at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport have been working without pay since October 1, according to a recent announcement from the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA). These workers, including TSA agents, FAA staff, air traffic controllers, and Customs and Border Protection officers, have continued to maintain airport operations during the ongoing government shutdown.

The Chamber and SEDA are asking local organizations and residents to provide support for these employees. They suggest donations such as gas or Uber gift cards to help with commuting costs, boxed lunches or meal vouchers for meals during shifts, monetary contributions for urgent needs, and discounts or special offers from local businesses, such as 0% interest personal bridge loans from financial institutions.

Organizations interested in contributing goods or services are encouraged to contact Erica Backus for more information on how to coordinate their support.

Monetary donations can be made directly to the United Way, which is managing the collection and distribution of funds to ensure they reach affected employees efficiently.

“Thank you for your compassion and commitment to Savannah’s airport community. Together, we can support those who continue serving our region,” the Chamber stated.
