Savannah State University has appointed LeAndrea Mikell as Assistant Vice President for Government and Community Relations. Mikell, an alumna of the university, previously served as Executive Director of Governmental Relations & Community Engagement.
In her new role, Mikell will oversee presidential and institutional communications and lead strategies related to governmental affairs, corporate partnerships, economic development, and community relations. The university states that these efforts are aimed at furthering its mission and expanding its impact locally and beyond.
During her time as Executive Director of Governmental Relations & Community Engagement, Mikell contributed to securing nearly $20 million in state and federal funding for Savannah State University. She also worked to raise the institution’s profile through strategic communications and developed relationships with government, corporate, and community partners. Notably, she played a part in hosting major events on campus, such as ESPN’s First Take filming and a visit from the Dutch Royal Couple.
Mikell also held the position of Interim Vice President for University Advancement from 2023 to 2024. Under her leadership, the university reported year-over-year growth in fundraising efforts and achieved a record $412,000 at its annual scholarship gala.
President Dr. Jermaine Whirl commented on the appointment: “Ms. Mikell has been instrumental in elevating Savannah State University’s profile and impact,” said President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “Her leadership, strategic insight, and unwavering dedication to our mission have made her an invaluable member of our team. I am confident that in her new role, LeAndrea will continue to foster collaboration, deliver meaningful results, and help guide SSU toward an even brighter future.”
Outside of her professional duties at Savannah State University, Mikell serves on several local boards including Union Mission, Employability, and Leadership Savannah. Her work has earned recognition such as Emerging Leader of the Year by the Southeast Georgia Leadership Forum (2025), inclusion in Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 (2022), and a Congressional Honor from Congressman Buddy Carter (2022). She is also a graduate of various regional leadership programs.
