Stephen Stewart, a longtime member of IAM Local S6, has been appointed as an International Auditor for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), effective October 1, 2025. The appointment was made by IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes.
Cervantes commented on Stewart’s selection: “Stephen Stewart has consistently demonstrated the highest level of integrity, dedication, and skill in every role he’s held in our union. His leadership at Local S6 and District 4 has shown that he understands the responsibility of financial stewardship and the importance of transparency to our members. I have no doubt he will excel as an International Auditor and serve our membership with distinction.”
Stewart joined IAM Local S6 at Bath Iron Works in 2011. He became Secretary-Treasurer for Local S6 in 2020 and has participated in various committees, including legislative and negotiating groups. In 2023, he was elected Recording Secretary of District 4, where he provided financial oversight.
Paul Kendall, IAM Assistant Secretary, said: “Stephen’s experience in financial oversight, negotiations, and legislative advocacy gives him a well-rounded perspective that will be invaluable in his new role. He knows what it takes to keep our Locals strong, accountable, and member-focused.”
Stewart has represented union members at organizations such as the Maine Machinists Council, New England Machinists Council, A. Philip Randolph Institute, Maine AFL-CIO, and at the 2024 IAM International Convention. He has also served on education and organizing committees while advocating for working families in Maine.
Bryan Pinette, Special Assistant to the General Secretary-Treasurer at IAM stated: “Stephen has an incredibly strong commitment to our members. His appointment as International Auditor is well deserved, and I’m confident he will be a tremendous asset to our team.”
Stewart is a graduate of Lake Region High School in Naples, Maine. He attended Bryant College and completed technical training through the Maine Maritime Apprenticeship Program at Bath Iron Works. He has participated in several IAM training programs focused on leadership and financial management.
With this appointment, Stewart will oversee financial matters for IAM Districts and Locals across several northeastern states.
