The U.S. Census Bureau has released the latest Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for August 2025. The BFS offer monthly data on new business applications and formations across the United States, providing both seasonally and nonseasonally adjusted figures at national, regional, and state levels.

These statistics are produced by the Census Bureau in partnership with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame. The full dataset includes twelve series—four related to applications and eight to formations—and is updated each month.

In addition to national data, the Census Bureau has also published Monthly Puerto Rico Business Applications. This experimental release applies the same methodology as used in existing BFS reports and covers four monthly business application series specific to Puerto Rico.

There is no accompanying news release for this announcement; it was distributed as a tip sheet only.
