The U.S. Census Bureau released new Business Formation Statistics for March 2026, according to an April 8 announcement. The data offer information on new business applications and formations across the United States and Puerto Rico.

The release of these statistics is significant because it provides timely insights into economic activity and trends in entrepreneurship. The BFS are a standard product from the Census Bureau, created in collaboration with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.

Each month, the full BFS dataset includes twelve series—four related to business applications and eight concerning business formations—with breakdowns at national, regional, and state levels. For Puerto Rico, four monthly business application series are included as part of this regular release. The data set offers both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted figures.

There was no accompanying news release for this announcement; only a tip sheet was provided by the Census Bureau.

Looking ahead, these monthly releases will continue to provide valuable data that can help inform policymakers, researchers, and businesses about ongoing trends in new business development.
