The U.S. Census Bureau has released the latest Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for December 2025. These statistics provide up-to-date information on new business applications and formations across the United States and Puerto Rico.
According to the Census Bureau, “The BFS provide timely and high frequency information on new business applications and formations in the United States and Puerto Rico.” The data are developed as a standard product by the agency, in collaboration with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.
Each month, the full BFS dataset is made available. It includes twelve series: four focused on applications and eight on formations. The data are broken down by nation, region, and state. For Puerto Rico specifically, four monthly business application series are included in each release. The BFS offers both seasonally adjusted and unadjusted figures.
No additional news release accompanied this announcement; it was issued as a tip sheet only.
