The U.S. Census Bureau has published the Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for January 2026. The BFS deliver updated information on new business applications and formations across the United States and Puerto Rico.

Developed in partnership with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame, the BFS serve as a standard data product for tracking trends in business creation.

Each month, the complete BFS dataset is made available, covering 12 series—four related to applications and eight focused on formations—at national, regional, and state levels. Puerto Rico is included with four monthly business application series as part of the regular release. The statistics are provided both with seasonal adjustments and without them.

There was no news release issued with this announcement; only a tip sheet was provided.
