The U.S. Census Bureau has published new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which tracks business conditions and future expectations on a regular basis. The survey covers multiunit and multilocation businesses, and complements information collected by other economic surveys, including data on revenues, employees, hours worked, and inventories.
The BTOS is designed to represent all employer businesses in the United States, except for farms. It offers a continuous view of the economy by providing updated data every two weeks with detailed breakdowns by geography and industry subsector. This approach helps measure the effects of events such as natural disasters or economic crises and supports monitoring recovery efforts.
The survey sample includes about 1.2 million businesses that participate in biweekly data collection. Businesses are divided into six panels of roughly 200,000 cases each; each panel reports once every 12 weeks over the course of a year. According to the Census Bureau, it takes an average respondent approximately nine minutes to complete the survey, including time spent reviewing instructions.
Survey results will be released every two weeks and will include breakdowns by sector, state, and for the 25 largest metropolitan statistical areas. These findings provide timely information for local, state, and federal officials involved in policy development and decision-making processes. Businesses also use this data to inform their own economic decisions.
